Brooklyn Bridge with the lights on

In all but one of my shots of the Brooklyn Bridge from the Manhattan side the lights are off. This is the outlier. I think they were turned off this day at 1 am, shortly after I shot this. Twin Hasselblad 500Cs with 50mm lenses mounted on a wooden bar as close as I can get them (about 4.25″ between lens centers). Provia 100f, f22, 4 minute exposure.

Fireworks above Lake Union in Seattle.

This was shot on July 4, 2014 from the rooftop of a friend’s condo. I get the entire 40′ long, flat space to myself! And I take advantage of the full length. The cameras are Hasselblad 500Cs, outfitted with 150mm lenses. They are triggered by a wired remote devised by my genius friend, James Baker, who owns the condo. KINGS OF FREEDOM by Kaun at UVa.

Kings-0309_MFT72_PV_ In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, this year we have a supposedly historic piece of Berlin wall grafitti art on our campus, on loan from the Hefner Collection.  It is Dennis Kaun’s KINGS OF FREEDOM.  I’m still researching the provenance of this artwork, because I’m a little bit suspicious of it, as it is clearly signed “copyright” 1990. Bethel Baptist Church

Bethel churchThe new Bethel Baptist Church Park was developed while memorializing the history and significance of this land to the Fourth Ward. Fourth Ward was the site of the original Freedmen’s Town neighborhood established by freed slaves after the Civil War. Bethel Missionary Baptist, founded in the late 1800’s by the Rev. Jack Yates, has had three sanctuaries on the same site, the earliest built in the 1890’s. The most recent church building, built in 1923, was gutted by fire in 2005, but the walls are still standing. The city bought the property in 2009 to preserve the church facade and to provide park space. The Bethel Park Project restored three walls and converted the rest of the property into a park. It is a really cool place to sit and meditate.

The ride "Enterprise" in action at the Puyallup Fair in Western Washington

 

This is a shot of the ride “Enterprise” at the Puyallup (pyoo AL ip) Fair in Western Washington. The Puyallup is one of the granddaddies of all the fairs. Its url is thefair.com.

See what I’m sayin’?

The enterprise starts out as a flat disk and then tilts up, making a fun pattern. The ride doesn’t last very long!

YOYO & Fireworks #8

Last year there were fireworks at the Evergreen State Fair and I didn’t know about it until it was happening. I was in a rotten spot to capture them and it all ended in tears.

This year I got the dates for the fireworks beforehand and guesstimated some good spots for shooting.

Reflection Lake Star Trails #2

Reflection Lake Star Trails #2I know what you’re thinking — the thing missing from this folio is some photos of Mt. Rainier.

For at least a couple years now Don Lopp has been bugging me to get down to Reflection Lake and capture this shot under a full moon. The idea is to take an exposure long enough to let the moon light the scene like day and still get star trails.

I shot some other film that night and processed it first. It came out much too dark and in the end I pushed this roll 2 stops. This was a 90 minute exposure. With the push it’s the equivalent of a 6 hour exposure (and star trails could have been 4x as long)! I am baffled by how true the colors look. I see no reciprocity failure.
