The Built Environment – Architecture and Machines

Ages ago, I shot this view of the (then) new UVA Hospital with a Hasselblad, maybe two of them on a bar – in any case this is a cha-cha to obtain the necessary stereobase, which was probably around a foot, judging from the parallax in the image. I imagine the exposure was around 30 seconds. Extra credit for the astronomers in the group that can identify the stars in the sky:

My “day job” is technical illustration. My clients are engineers at the University of Virginia, mostly. One day I went to visit a lab, and discovered this gigantic machine. Impossibly complex in its construction, for all I knew it could have been a time machine. So I started calling it the “time machine,” whenever I mentioned to my engineer client, and that I’d like to come in some day to photograph it. The title of the image that I finally made says about the same thing. For real, this is a Directed Vapor Deposition machine. A big electron gun hits one material, vaporizes it, and the vapors are deposited onto another material. Believe it or not, it is not a custom made machine. You buy these things retail. Cost? about $1M:

Temporal Continuum Distortion Analyzer (Posterior Aspect)

In or around 2012, I had the opportunity to photograph inside a retired coal-fired power plant not far from where I live. This plant, in Bremo Bluff, VA, was the first “automatic” coal fired power plant built in USA. “Automatic” meant in those days that most of the valves, flaps, conveyor belts, and other machinery was centrally controlled. Which means, there was a central control room, where through the use of electrical switches, one could remotely actuate any of the hundreds of valves in the plant – as these were electrically actuated. I’m sure there was a measure of fear or distrust in the system early on, as plant operators were instead used to shouting control commands at a team of plant workers, on whom one could surely better rely to get the job done than the new-fangled electric motors.

I worked on three separate days in the plant to make photographs, using with great pleasure John Thurston’s custom TL-120-55 for the wide angle views. I am forever indebted to John for his generous loan of the camera to me that year. In this view we have my old friend Chuck Holzner up there on another level (see the white hard-hat?) taking some of his own pictures. Along the left side of the view, rising up through the various levels, is one of the four burners in the plant. These are 100 foot tall furnaces (not counting the smokestack outside the building!), that included Ash removal apparatus at the very bottom, a furnace chamber 1/3 of the way up including hundreds of pipes for heat exchange (i.e. for boiling water, making steam), and at the top a variety of filters to capture particulates in the exhaust. I’ll guess this was a three seconds exposure:

Elsewhere in the plant, I captured this view of just a tiny fraction of the pipes and plumbing that, along with grated floors and vast spaces, characterized the place. Probably a thirty seconds exposure in this dark spot:

I’ll close with an image obtained in or around 2014 at the United States Botanical Garden in Washington, DC, where I fell in love with the “Jungle” greenhouse that is central to the place. In this three-stories tall greenhouse, one can commune with a variety of lush tropical plants, even in the deep of winter, and witness the slow motion battle between the built environment and the imprisoned flora. This picture was taken with a Sputnik, a good bit after sunset – I like the interplay of just a little natural light in the background, with artificial lights in the foreground. I imagine about a ten or twenty second exposure.

Construction

For the past year or so there’s been a hotel going up across the street from my studio.  Though I swore some years ago that I was “done” with “clear buildings,” the proximity and thus convenience of this building stimulated me to make one last one.  It’s the reason I bought a Sigma (DP-1 Merrill) camera: this last Clear Building will be shot with some decent resolution, so that I can make truly large prints.

That work has been digital and is ongoing.  But on a recent early morning, I found the building looking quite attractive, complex and mysterious.  I shot it with a Sputnik, shooting cha-cha to obtain a larger baseline – maybe 12 inches – to give it more depth and interest.  I did not record exposures but I think I shot thirty seconds at f-11 onto Kodak E-200.

USBG-1302_MFT72_PV_I shot the USBG earlier this year during the day, and it is a smorgasbord of post-industrial steam-punk vs. wilderness 3d imagery.  I returned last month to try and capture the magical evening light, which makes the place look even more mysterious than it already is.  I was hampered by equipment problems (in part of my own making), and did not get very many shots.  This is one of the better ones, taken about 5 minutes after the “magic” lighting had ended.  (Equipment failure prevented pictures during the magic 15 minutes!).

Then, on the drive home (about two hours highway driving), my car broke down near Culpeper, about halfway home.  Michele and Jet had to come fetch me in the middle of the night.  The car was repaired in Culpeper over the course of three more weeks.  I only got it back just recently.  All in all, an ill-fated photo mission.

KINGS OF FREEDOM by Kaun at UVa.

Kings-0309_MFT72_PV_ In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, this year we have a supposedly historic piece of Berlin wall grafitti art on our campus, on loan from the Hefner Collection.  It is Dennis Kaun’s KINGS OF FREEDOM.  I’m still researching the provenance of this artwork, because I’m a little bit suspicious of it, as it is clearly signed “copyright” 1990. This is a shot of the ride “Enterprise” at the Puyallup (pyoo AL ip) Fair in Western Washington. The Puyallup is one of the granddaddies of all the fairs. Its url is thefair.com.

The enterprise starts out as a flat disk and then tilts up, making a fun pattern. The ride doesn’t last very long!

This is the one shot of the Giant Wheel and Fun n Games that worked for me this year. †his image does have some retinal rivalry but I think it serves to give the image a bit of action and adds to the image.

Zero Gravity & Rockets #2I’d been to the Puyallup (pyoo AL ip) Spring Fair on Friday night and saw a poster advertising fireworks on Saturday “at around 9pm.” I made the trek the next night, got there early, scouted where the fireworks would be and what I could get in my foreground, etc. My plan was to shoot with the TL-120, and I started capturing other images while I waited. At 8pm I had just finished a roll in the TL-120 when I started hearing boom-boom-boom behind me. Not knowing how long the fireworks would last, I zipped up my backpack, grabbed both tripods with cameras already set, and hurried over to my spot. I would have done much better with the TL-120, since I would only have to wind one camera, and there’s more to check on the 2 Hasselblads. And sync is not an issue on the TL-120.

Arthouse 2

This is the living room of the Arthouse, a bed and breakfast where I stay whenever I’m in New York (unless they are booked up).  They do no advertising and let their rooms out only to artists that have been personally introduced through friends.  So it’s a bit exclusive, I guess…  There are five rooms of various sizes, and 2.5 baths that the guests share.

Every morning, breakfast is included, and one typically finds guests from overseas, often from Germany or nearby central arthouse_2_MFT72_European countries, Spain, Mexico, or other countries in South America.  Sometimes the guests are so interesting, you hardly need to see the rest of the city.  I stay there once or twice a month, because I have a part-time job driving a coach bus to and from NYC from Charlottesville.  I always bring my bicycle.

Bike Works NYC

This is a great little bike shop in SoHo that I discovered years ago while shopping for some esoteric bike parts online.  They have a fabulous web page with lots of fun historical content, plus galleries of unusual bikes they’ve had in their shop (see this page showing some of my bikes).  My city bike, pictured at the lower left of the view (black frame, 20″ wheels), is in their web galleries as well.  This view is of their “showroom” and counter – an area about 10 x 15 ft. bikeworks_NYC_1_MFT72_ To obtain this exposure, I held the camera upside down against the door frame above my head, shimmed a bit with a bicycle cog under the front edge of the camera (I couldn’t bring a tripod on my bike).  I took numerous pictures this way, bracketting my exposures.

I have my night exposures of carnival rides pretty well set, but this particular ride was running without  the spotlights for most of the duration of the ride. It looked darker than usual, so I bumped the exposure. Taken with twin Hasselblad 500Cs, 50 mm lenses. Exposure could have been 16 seconds at f22.

The top part of the ride is swinging down, and looks to me like the pendulum on a clock. It intersects with Sinbad’s  extended sword in the painted  backdrop. It looks as though he’s hitting the pendulum with a loud KAZAM!

Last year I was on a break between contracts, and Mandy saw a window of opportunity to sneak off for a vacation. Picking the southwest US was easy. She had only 2 weeks available, but I was free as a bird, so I offered to drive down to Page Arizona a week early. That gave me a few days to spend with a photo guide, Mandy flew down to meet me, and we took it from there. I’ve seen shots of Antelope Canyon for years, but I had no idea what a tourist trap the place has become. When I went to Antelope, which is a fairly short Canyon, there were 200 other photographers crammed into this tiny space elbow to elbow.
I also went to Canyon X, which only one tour company has the rights to visit, and it was a completely different scene. Unfortunately, most of the day at Canyon X we were getting filtered light, but there were some lucky breaks, like this one. It’s all reflected light bouncing around. There’s no surface in this shot getting direct sunlight. I metered off the highlights.

I think this makes a nice complement to John’s ice cave.

Taken last September at the Puyallup (pyoo AL ip) Fair, about 40 minutes south of Seattle. I had avoided the Fair for years, and finally went 2 years ago. Now I can’t get enough of it. Be warned — neither of my spuds has perfectly matched lenses. So any mounting errors are not my fault :^)
