Yurok Open Pit Salmon Bar-B-Que

Yurok Open Pit Salmon Bar-B-Que This open pit salmon bar-b-que was photographed at the 46th Annual Yurok Tribe Salmon Festival in Klamath, California. A lot of the discussion focused on the collapse of the salmon fishery, central to the social, cultural, spiritual and economic life of the Yurok Tribe. The salmon tasted great.

It All Started Right Here

It All Started Right Here

I am not a car buff but I am impressed by the huge amount of work enthusiasts invest in restoring old vehicles. The contrast between this 36 Chevy and the magnificent restored cars illustrates how much skill, time and money is required to transform a pile of junk into a winning car. Photographed at the Cool Northern Nights On The Coast 6th Annual Benefit Car Show in Crescent City, California, organized by the Northern Knights Car Club. Original slide shot August 15, 2009 with a tripod-mounted Heidoscop with Provia 100P at 1/50th at f18.

Triple 32 Roadster

Triple 32 Roadster

This 32 roadster was photographed at the Cool Northern Nights On The Coast 6th Annual Benefit Car Show in Crescent City, California, organized by the Northern Knights Car Club. The show takes place in the beautiful port of Crescent City, and shows an impressive range of show cars.  I hope you see why I titled it Triple 32 Roadster.

Mount Royal Cemetery with back-lit ice-covered tree

mount-royal-cemetery-backlit-ice-covered-treeI noticed Dale Walsh also likes photographing in Mount Royal Cemetery, an oasis of calm in the middle of Montreal. Freezing rain covered the trees with ice and then a snow storm blanketed the tombstones. I like the way the trunk hides the sun in the left image, but it peeks out in the right image.

Xmas decor in Verdun #|

xmas-decor-verdun-13Most of the homes in Verdun are simple brick rowhouses that all look much the same. With limited opportunity for originality in the architecture of the home, the people of Verdun go wild decorating their homes at Xmas and Halloween.

Original image shot December 13, 2008 with a tripod-mounted Heidoscop on Provia 400X exposed for 2.5 seconds at f22 with some fill flash. (There is no flash sync on the Heidoscop so I just set off the flash during the long exposure.)

Chilies and flowers in Jean Talon Market

Chilies & flowers in Jean Talon Market
Jean Talon Market is an important institution in Montreal, full of vendors of all kinds of fine foods that vary with the season. I asked the vendor in the middle of this scene if I could photograph his stand, which he agreed to while continuing to work threading garlands of chilies.

Shot at a small lake in northern Maine near Mount Katahdin.
Back-lit dew on horsetails
Velvia Pro100
Original slide, taken with tripod-mounted Heidoscop at 1/15 sec. @ f25 on May 22, 2007.
I did a whole series experimenting with back-lit subjects, not the easiest thing to pull off successfully with the uncoated lenses and less-than-ideal viewfinder on the Heidoscop.
Snackbar waitress

Original slide, taken with tripod-mounted Heidoscop at 1/8 sec. @ f25 on July 29, 2007
These snackbars are common throughout rural Quebec. I am pleased that the waitress cooperated with the shot.
Early the morning after

About the Image    Quebecers celebrate their national identity on June 24th, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Quebec. Hundreds of thousands of people party into the night, and early the next morning when I took this shot there were still thousands of people at the site of the festivities. The clean-up crews are very efficient, finishing cleaning the site by 10 AM.
