Mirror Portrait

This self portrait of my wife Marie-Claude and me plays a bit more on the theme of mirrors. This time I chose a mirror with a very visible frame to emphasize its presense. The larger size allowed for greater stereo overlap within the mirror itself compared to the smaller mirror used in the previous set.

Saint Brother André

This photograph was taken in the small chapel above which Saint Brother André lived in Montreal, an icon of whom can be seen in the mirror. He led the construction of the huge St. Joseph’s Oratory, and the plaques of thanks to Saint Joseph can be seen on the back wall behind the crutches left by pilgrims. US Consulate at the Chateau

The Stars and Stripes and the US Seal are subtle signs of the US Consulate close to Quebec City’s Chateau Frontenac: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_Frontenac

The Consulate is witness to two centuries of friendship between the US and Canada following the war of 1812. I am playing in the early morning light with a mirror to juxtapose adjacent objects in new ways.

Champlain at the Chateau

A large statue of Samuel de Champlain stands beside the Chateau Frontenac, in honour of his founding of Quebec City over 400 years ago:

Green oval on Burning Bush

The green leaves in the oval mirror are in striking contrast to the red of the Burning Bush. It is ironic that the shrub is called a Burning Bush as it sits in front of Quebec City’s Armoury that burned in July 2008: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City_Armoury

In this series I have played with a mirror to juxtapose adjacent objects in new ways. I am bothered by the softness of the image in the mirror, probably caused by the wind moving the mirror, but my wife likes it the most of the four and asked me to include it anyway.

Playing chess, big chess

Does the blur signify motion and dynamism in 3D like it can in 2D, or is it a problem? Do we have less tolerance for movement in 3D? If yes, is it just a convention or do we need to be able to see the entire image clearly for the illusion to work well? I have another shot of this scene without the chess players that is clear but static.

Reaching for the ray of sun

Certain species of trees, such as the Western hemlock in the foreground, tolerate shade and remain small for years in the undergrowth waiting for an opening in the canopy to initiate rapid growth.

Lifeguards, Long Beach NY

There is something contradictory about lifeguards. They represent authority and serious responsibility but also good times, youth and summer. There are long periods of idleness interspersed with action and occasionally crisis. The serious gaze of the lifeguard in the foreground is echoed by the people behind him, while the lifeguard on the chair faces the other way as she blows a warning on her fluorescent orange whistle.

The giant statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe must be among the most photographed tourist spots. It is a bit ironic to find this lumberjack in the middle of the tiny remnants of old-growth redwood forest when it was his profession that cut 97% of the redwood forest. Many visitors are impressed when Paul engages them in conversation, although this girl sitting on his foot seems more interested in the conversation on her cell phone.
